Q: Don't UV rays damage the skin?
A: Skin damage is caused primarily by overexposure
to UV rays and burning. A healthy tan, on the other
hand, helps prevent sunburn. The knowledgeable staff at Pacific Coast Tans will advise you on the proper
duration of your tanning sessions so you don't get
burned, and will recommend lotions that moisturize
and protect your skin.
Q: What about melanoma?
A: Research has shown that many factors contribute
to melanoma, the only aggressive form of skin cancer.
Heredity, fair skin, an abnormally high number of
moles on one's body and a history of repeated childhood
sunburns have all been identified as potential risk
factors for this disease. Scientists have found, however,
that people who receive regular exposure to sunlight
get fewer melanomas, and no link has been found between
indoor tanning and increased risk of melanoma.
Q: Wouldn’t I
be better off just staying out of the sun entirely?
A: Many people believe incorrectly that eliminating
normal sun exposure erases the risk of damage from
the sun. In reality, avoiding the sun entirely leaves
you susceptible to damage when you do go outdoors
and increases your risk of burning. Indoor tanning
allows you to develop a tan slowly and in a controlled
environment.
Q: What are the health benefits of tanning?
A: In addition to helping prevent sunburn, regular
exposure to UV rays is necessary for your skin to
produce vitamin D. Bone diseases such as osteoporosis
are linked to vitamin D deprivation, and researchers
have discovered links between vitamin D and the prevention
of breast, colon and prostate cancers. For more on the health benefits of tanning click here to learn more about The UV Advantage, a book by Michael Holick, PH.D., MD and Mark Jenkins. This book gives a different medical insight to sun exposure and suggests that regular moderate exposure to UV light is the key to healthy living.

Q: How do I figure out the best tanning regimen for
my skin?
A: Just ask any of our expert tanning consultants!
They will analyze your skin type and recommend a safe
and effective tanning schedule that will produce the
best results for your skin type. Do you have fair
skin that burns easily? Short sessions or perhaps
UV-free tanning may work best for you. Do you want
to intensify your tanning experience? We’ll
help choose the best beds and lotions to achieve the
effect you’re looking for.
Benefits
of Lotions
Many people perceive tanning lotions as just an extravagance.
In fact, lotions play an essential role in helping
develop and maintain a healthy tan. At Pacific Coast
Tans, we carry a full range of Australian Gold and
Swedish Beauty lotions for all skin types, including:
Accelerators. Skin has a natural SPF that resists
tanning for 7 to 10 minutes after you begin a tanning
session. Accelerating lotions help you tan faster
and also moisturize the skin, replenishing vitamins
and minerals.
Bronzers. These produce a cosmetic tanning effect
immediately upon application. DHA-based bronzers
are similar to gentle self-tanners. Bio-bronzers,
which are activated by melanin in the skin, add to
your natural tan.
Tinglers. Recommended for advanced tanners, these
lotions invigorate the skin, promoting circulation.
Our experienced staff can recommend combinations
of lotions that improve tanning for your skin type.
